DIY Wall Art

6-20 2011 By admin 3 Comments
DIY wall art
This weekend I came up with an idea to take an existing wall art sign we had above our washer and dryer and turn it into something new for our entryway makeover.

I already had the vinyl wall art that I purchased about 6 months ago but still hadn’t used {does anyone else do stuff like that?}, so all I needed to do was change up the sign.

First, I began by lightly sanded down the front of the sign with my sanding block. I did this just enough to remove the former painted saying that was on the sign.

Next, take a damp paper towel, cloth, etc. and wipe down your sign to remove any dust or debris.

Paint a coat {or two} of paint on your newly sanded sign. I used some leftover paint from our bathroom remodel called Winter’s Day which is a BEHR paint/primer in one. It is a light greyish blue color and was exactly the look I was going for. I used a paint brush and painted on one coat and let it dry for 3 hours.

After the paint was dry {enough}, I used a paint scraper to remove paint from the edges of the sign, giving it a distressed look.

I then went over the edges with my Distressed Ink to darken things up a bit. Love the results this product gives and it is so much easier than using glaze! I found mine at Joann’s Fabric but you could also Google and look online.

I followed the distressing with one coat of spray on poly {I used water based poly} and let it dry for about 15-20 minutes.

Lastly, I applied my vinyl decal and here are the results….

What do you think? I love that I chose the greyish blue color as the signs backdrop. It adds just enough color to the entryway =)

Thank you! Yes, the distressed ink was so much easier than using glaze or stain. Less messy and much quicker to apply!
